At Master Wings Publishing, we believe every veteran has a story worth preserving. Military memoirs and biographies are more than historical records. They are deeply personal accounts of resilience, service, sacrifice, and purpose that connect readers from all walks of life.

We spoke with the Master Wings Publishing Associate Publisher, Sonya Sindberg, about why veteran stories matter, what makes a compelling military memoir, and why now is the perfect time to tell your story.

Why are veteran and military stories so important to Master Wings Publishing's mission?

Master Wings Publishing is committed to amplifying and honoring voices that might otherwise go unheard. These veteran and military stories document the human side of history, which fosters critical empathy and connection that we all need. They’re often therapeutic, healing, and meaningful not only to the audience, but also to the author.

What has been the most rewarding part of helping individuals turn their life stories into published books?

Watching authors realize the impact of their own stories is incredibly rewarding.

Sometimes I have the privilege of seeing the strength and growth of the author. They can hold uncertainty around whether a story is worth telling, or if their actions are significant or impactful. But through the process of creating a memoir, patterns of strength and purpose can become clear, and that perspective shifts. At the end, they see and hear their value, and that new heart is really wonderful. How do military memoirs and biographies inspire audiences beyond the veteran community?

A good military memoir or biography isn’t just “landed here on this date” and “enlisted on this date.” It’s a narrative, a human perspective, an authentic expression of self that gives insight into universal human truths. Resilience, fear, loss, hope – audiences across cultures, generations, experiences leave these kind of military works with new reflections on service and purpose. A well written military memoir provides insight into military life while encouraging reflection on the challenges and triumphs we all experience as human beings.

What makes Master Wings Publishing's process unique when working with authors?

One of our core values is ensuring authors remain in control of their stories and serve as the primary voice throughout the publishing process.

We recognize that authenticity and heart are the strongest aspects of these kind of projects, and we’re dedicated to helping authors get their vision and their message across. What makes a powerful military memoir or veteran autobiography stand out?

Balancing scale is always impressive. Being able to jump between tight action and broad impact is incredibly compelling, as too is covering a whole scope of life. It’s impressive to recognize and explore that there’s a story in one’s whole life, beyond just a few moments. The stories that resonate most deeply are those that combine honesty, perspective, and emotional authenticity.

What kinds of stories or themes would you love to see more veterans write about?

Introspection and emotions can be difficult to identify and write about, but I believe they’re the arms of connection with one’s audience, and the aspects of the stories that only the authors themselves can write. Generally, I’d love to see more attention to feelings and motivation in this genre. For veterans who are thinking about sharing their story but feel hesitant, what message would you give them?

Your story does not have to be perfect. Your story matters.

You are the only one who has lived this life and you are the only one who has this perspective. What is ordinary to you is deeply meaningful to someone else, and can do things like help another veteran feel less alone, give a family member a better understanding, and inspire someone who is going through their own difficult chapter. Don’t bury your experiences: let them be a bridge to connection, healing, and inspiration. Every story has the power to leave a lasting legacy. Our focus has always been about more than publishing books. It is about preserving legacies, honoring lived experiences, and helping authors share stories that educate, inspire, and connect people across generations. We believe every author deserves to be heard, supported, and empowered to tell their story in their own voice.

That commitment extends beyond the pages of a book through our podcast, Beyond the Page, where we continue meaningful conversations with authors, veterans, and industry professionals about storytelling, publishing, and the experiences that shape us. Whether through a memoir, a biography, or a conversation, our mission remains the same: to help remarkable stories find the audience they deserve.
